Elevating Conflict To “The Lowest Common Boss.”

In a matrix role, it may also be unclear whom to elevate a conflict to. It could be your boss, a team member’s boss, a stakeholder’s boss or all of the above. It could be the boss who sits where the matrix merges. One of the leaders I interviewed called this person “The Lowest Common Boss.” Depending on how high up you have to go to find this person, he or she may be an option, but if the Lowest Common Boss is more than two levels above you, think twice.
